Minecraft movies are real. It’s definitely happening, and while we know very little about it and never really, we have a new release date (via Deadline).
First off, the Minecraft movie is now expected to hit theaters on April 4, 2025, which has been a while. We also know it will be directed by Jared Hess, the brains behind films like Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre. Last but not least, we learned last year that Jason Momoa had been tapped to star in the film.
The Minecraft movie, which was first announced in 2014 with Shawn Levy as director, has undergone many changes since then. In 2016, with new director Rob McElhenney on board, fans were told to expect the film on May 24, 2019. Then, Rob McElhenney was replaced as director by Peter Sollett in 2018, and the movie’s release date was pushed back once more to 2022.
Now we have Jared Hess as director and a 2025 release date. At this rate, whether this will stick is anyone’s guess, but hopefully a live-action Minecraft movie will happen soon.
According to its IMDb page, the film’s description reads: “A malevolent ender dragon sets out on a path of destruction, prompting a young girl and her band of unlikely adventurers to set out to save the Overworld.”
One of the best survival games of all time, Minecraft is a staple for many gamers for some comforting crafting and brick breaking. Seeing it turned into a live-action movie will be quite a feat, so it’s no surprise that the movie has hit its stride so far.
Adapting video games into movies seems to be the hot topic of the moment, with several remakes of classic games on the way. Just yesterday, the Super Mario Bros. movie came out, and it’s actually pretty good.
