After the first modders Half-Life: Already making Alyx playable with mouse and keyboard, a hord mode follows. With Xen Thug, Manello changes the gameplay of the game and lets you go on forever Kill waves of enemies in VR. You can see how it currently looks in the video at the beginning of this article.
The project can be found in the very early version 0.1 on Github. The developer also plans to publish regular updates and always expand the functionality of the mod. So far, however, it has been more like a proof of concept.
The current scope
- Maps: There is still a very rough test map.
- Opponent waves: New enemies gradually spawn, leaving a resource called polymer on death.
- Vending machines: You can buy life points and ammunition at various self-service machines.
- Endless: The waves never stop. You can play the mode endlessly.
Although there is currently only one test card, the mode can be according to the developer port to any other map. However, this should be a bit cumbersome and require a lot of work. You can also use the Hammer Editor to create your own maps.

plans for the future
In the near future, Manello wants to expand the basic structure of his mod and fix a number of bugs. Another goal is more opportunities for players who want to create maps for this new mode. The following features are expected to come soon:
- Shops for mines, grenades and Xen grenades planned
- Mappers can adjust the prices of the items
- Drop chances for polymer should change
- The number of polymers per kill should be changeable
- Breaks between the waves
XenThug is not the first mod project on Half-Life: Alyx. For example, the player VectOR wants you to play the entire Half-Life 2 campaign in VR in the future. Even though Valve has not yet provided an SDK for the Source 2 engine on which the VR title is based.
