Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Call of Duty: Warzone are now so huge that we can unpack the superlative: it is currently the largest PC game at all (without mods). However, this does not refer to the size or the game world, but to the file size of around 180 GB on the PC.
In January, the new CoD was ranked second in the Gamerant size ranking behind Quantum Break (with 178 GB). Thanks to some extensive updates that increased the download size, Modern Warfare is now at the top.
What makes CoD: Modern Warfare so huge?
One in the truest sense of the word Battle Royale mode CoD: Warzone plays a major role, which is also available as a separate Free2Play coupling. This part of the game is correspondingly large: As a standalone, you need around 80 – 100 GB space for Warzone. If you already have Modern Warfare, the additional download size for BR mode is around 20 GB.
Patches and updates are also big: Season 3 came with a download of 16 GB and only recently released update 1.20, for which players also had to download 32 GB. Of course, the game does not automatically get bigger with every update, some patches are also used to reduce the amount of data, but nevertheless some extra gigabytes came together over time.

During the release, developer Infinity Ward recommended at least 175 GB of storage space keep clear for modern warfare. However, this value has already been exceeded, the game is currently around 180 GB for the PC version, and it is even larger on the consoles.
There are always discussions about the enormous size of Modern Warfare, for example on Reddit. Many wonder if it is it’s really necessary to use that much space or whether it could be better compressed with optimizations.
Competition in the size race: The flight simulation X-Plane 11 would also be a possible candidate for the largest game by file size, but was left out of this ranking – you can always determine which areas you want to install or uninstall. The basic game is only 65 GB in size and the individual areas about 20 GB. So you are not dependent on a mega download like in the case of Modern Warfare.
