While I was able to try out Monster Hunter Wilds for an hour during gamescom, I also had the opportunity to interview three of the creative minds behind the game. During an interview lasting about twenty minutes, I was able to discuss with them several aspects of the game and in particular on one of the new features that the title brings.

Monster Hunter Wilds breaks new ground at gamescom

Little by little, the Capcom teams have been presenting Monster Hunter Wilds since the Game Awards 2023. The next episode in the saga seems to be the most ambitious of the saga at the moment. Like World at the time, it wants to take advantage of the new generation consoles. Capcom developers offer a much more immersive world than before, but above all a world that lives independently. This is the greatest novelty of this work, which is served by an independent artificial intelligence with respect to the monsters… but not only that!

Afterwards, viewers of Gamescom Opening Night Live were able to see a never-before-seen trailer for Monster Hunter Wilds. This introduced the new area of Scarlet Forest, returned to the villagers of the Windy Plains, and introduced a new mechanic : that of “Support Fighters“.

These support hunters are computer-controlled characters that can assist the player in the huntThe latter then only has to fire an emergency rocket (which is also used to call players from all over the world) and the fighters controlled by artificial intelligence return. A not insignificant addition to a saga like Monster Hunter, about which I was able to ask a few questions.

Monster Hunter: Why are there no difficulty levels?

It was with Ryozo Tsujimoto (producer of the saga), Yuya Tokuda (game director) and Kaname Fujioka (artistic and executive director) with whom I spoke for half an hour on the last day of gamescom. I first wanted to know what the process behind adding support fighters was. This is what they answered me:

I wanted to include this feature because I know there are some players who like to play alone. I want to give them the option to get support when they need it. It’s also a way for us to give them a taste of the multiplayer experience through support fighters.

This feature of the support hunters makes the game easier: With three other characters, the monster no longer knows where to turn. This gives the player more peace of mind so they can cause damage without taking risks.. And if the player cannot control these support fighters directly, there is a reason:

We are already exploring all options in the early stages of development. The idea behind this feature is to give the feeling of playing in multiplayer mode. You don’t give orders to your friends (laughs). The player almost feels like he is accompanied by other players who can adapt to different situations.

Unless they have stated it, this artificial intelligence also promises better immersion. A word that is the strong theme of Monster Hunter Wilds. I also took the opportunity to ask them the question about the lack of difficulty. A legitimate choice that could make this episode more accessible, but without giving the feeling of playing with multiple characters.. But not only:

The idea of Monster Hunter is to face colossal creatures. We need to make hunting attractive by providing challenges (…) We want players to feel a sense of satisfaction and pride after killing prey. And I think that not having difficulty modes is the best way to achieve this.

Greater immersion, the ability to play with multiple people, even alone, and a demanding challenge are what Monster Hunter Wilds promises to offer. The final answer will be available when it is released in 2025 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series.
