We are still four months away from the release of Monster Hunter Wilds and the news continues to flow, especially regarding the multiplayer mode that can accommodate a large number of players!

Summary

  • 100 players?!

100 players?!

The Monster Hunter Wilds beta began for players with PlayStation Plus and will begin for others in a few days. That’s why Capcom has lifted the veil on Monster Hunter Wilds’ multiplayer capabilities. The promise of online lobbies accommodating up to 100 players would provide a centralized social space for players. This feature is intended to promote interaction between community members and create an even more immersive gaming experience.

Veterans of the saga certainly can’t believe their eyes when they see this information, and we must be right! However, it is important to note that like Monster Hunter World, games are limited to 4 hunters and simultaneous viewing is limited to 16 players.as mentioned in a previous tweet on Capcom’s official X account:

At the same time, it’s normal to be cautious since Monster Hunter is primarily an action RPG and not an MMO. Would the title be able to support so many players on a single screen? And most importantly: what would happen to the organization in the lobby? There would certainly be a lot of confusion between hunters posting a quest and those accepting it. However, one game in the saga before that managed to mix the MMO genre with the essence of the Capcom saga: Monster Hunter Frontier Z.

The Monster Hunter MMO

Originally released in 2007, Monster Hunter Frontier was Capcom’s attempt to bring a massively multiplayer perspective to its monster hunting series. An attempt that has borne fruit, as the title will receive a multitude of updates that will bring more and more content, monsters and features. Additionally, the main series on console will be heavily inspired by MH Frontier’s innovations, such as the hunting styles for Monster Hunter Generations Ultimatecertain hunter skills present in Monster Hunter WorldCertain monsters new to Frontier have even been included in the main saga, such as the Lavasioth in Freedom Unite and World or Espinas in Monster Hunter Rise Sunbreakone of the MMO’s iconic monsters. The title was known for its difficulty level and the designs of its very “over the top” monsters.

Unfortunately, Monster Hunter Frontier closed in 2019. The exact reasons for this closure are not entirely clearbut it’s likely that increasing competition in the MMORPG market and the difficulty of sustaining such a large game were the cause. Thanks to private servers, the fan base still managed to save the game. In short, a great game whose influence could reach as far as Monster Hunter Wilds with this huge lobby.

It remains to be seen what the game has in store for us. As a reminder, the beta begins for PS Plus owners from 10/29/24 to 10/31/24 and for PS5, Xbox Series and PC from 11/1/24 to 11/4/24. The title is expected for February 28, 2025.
