After Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, more Xbox titles will probably be released for PlayStation and the like in the future. The Xbox boss hinted at this in his statement on the decision to bring the Indy title to the PS5.
It was one of the biggest issues this year in the gaming industry: Microsoft is switching to a multiplatform strategy and is bringing previously Xbox-exclusive titles to PlayStation and other consoles. What was initially made quite a big deal then seemed to be no big deal from the perspective of Xbox fans: a total of four titles have made the jump to PlayStation 5 to date, and these were mostly smaller games or live service titles like Sea of Thieves. The big blockbusters have been avoided so far – until now.
Yesterday, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle was confirmed for PlayStation 5 as part of the gamescom Opening Night Live. Although the game from Machine Games will initially be released as a time-exclusive for PC and Xbox Series X/S in December, the PS5 version will follow in spring 2025. Xbox boss Phil Spencer has now commented on this and hinted in his statement that more Xbox titles will follow on PlayStation and possibly Switch in the future.
Regarding the decision made, Spencer says: “We run a business. It’s definitely true that the bar is very high for us within Microsoft in terms of results that we have to give back to the company. Because we get a high level of support, which is really great and it enables us to do a lot.”
And he continued: “I look at how we can make our games as strong as possible? Our platform is growing, on consoles, on PC and in the cloud. I think it’s just a strategy that works for us. And the last thing I’ll say is that there’s a lot of pressure on the games industry right now. It’s been growing for a long time and now people have to look at how they can generate more ways for growth. We as fans, as players, we just have to realize that there will be even more change in the future, especially how the traditional ways of making and distributing games are changing.”
“It’s going to change for all of us. But the end result has to be better games that more people can play. If we’re not focusing on that, then I think we’re focusing on the wrong things,” Spencer said.
In the entire statement, he also explained that the first four multiplatform releases were used to learn from them. This led to the decision to continue with Indiana Jones and the Great Circle – and ultimately this will lead to significantly more Xbox titles on the PS5 in the future, even if new releases may remain Xbox exclusive for a short time.
