Mortal Kombat 1: As promised: gameplay, story info, cameo moves and more

As promised, NetherRealm showed the first scenes of Mortal Kombat 1 at the Summer Game Fest. It was about the story, but the developers also had tangible gameplay in their luggage. Fatalities weren’t missing either, of course.

Developer NetherRealm kept its word and released the first concrete information about Mortal Kombat 1 at Summer Game Fest 2023. In terms of story, there were a few cutscenes to see, for example with old warhorses like Raiden, Liu Kang and Milena. They smacked their faces in fancy locations, for example in a Shaolin monastery or a swanky villa. As is known, the fresh part restarts the story, for example Scorpion and Sub-Zero are brothers in the new universe.

Of course, the gameplay shown did not lack any blood. In the Fatalities, heads will be crushed on Hall of Fame stones, fighters will be beheaded with their bare hands, and so much more. The cameo system was also shown and explained in more detail. In addition to your main fighter, you choose a secondary character that you can summon with a simple press of a button and use his powers and moves. Even within a combo you can call for help. It was important for Ed Boon, the creator of the series, to emphasize that it is not a tag team mechanic.

Your selection is not particularly limited. For example, you can control Sub-Zero and use Sub-Zero as a cameo. Some warriors are actually only available as helpers, often they come from earlier parts of the series. For example, Goro was mentioned. By the way: Jean-Claude van Damme plays Johnny Cage.

Mortal Kombat 1 will be released on September 19, 2023 for PC, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch.
