The Mortal Kombat cinematic reboot, released nearly a year ago, has been far from unanimous. Despite unconvincing results, the production gave the green light to a sequel already in the works. To reassure fans of the license, the screenwriter of this new work spoke at length during an interview.
A deadly result at the box office
Mortal Kombat and cinema is a somewhat strange love story that lasts for many years. The license is one of the most represented games of the seventh art, for better or for worse. If Paul WS Anderson’s adaptation remains popular with fans today, it’s largely because it perfectly synthesizes the Nanardesque side of the various works.
With the constant success of the licensed games over the years, the film studios logically came up with the idea of reissuing the cinematic adaptations. For this reason, in 2021, lovers of hemoglobin were entitled to a new film that would revive the machine. Despite all the good will in the world, this new vision has not really been able to seduce more seriously than before. With $83 million in box office earnings versus a budget of $55 million excluding commercials, Simon McQuoid’s film made a splash. Fans were ultimately unconvinced by this reboot, which didn’t stop Warner and New Line from giving the green light to develop a sequel.
Mortal Kombat 2 is supposed to piss off viewers?
If public discontent from the first film’s low scores was widely heard, Warner still intends to exploit the vein for at least one more sequel. Jeremy Slater, the screenwriter of this new opus, spoke at length on this topic. For him, the development teams got the message.
It’s been great fun so far. We’re about halfway through the script. I work closely with the director and the studios, the creators of the games, and I think — I can’t comment on the story, but I think they really learned their lesson last time around and said, ‘This is what it’s on the fans reacted, the audience liked that and it didn’t work out the way we hoped.” So we really see this new opportunity as a chance to take what worked on the first film and do it even better to do and give the audience more and to do something that’s actually incredibly satisfying, exciting and unpredictable.
The screenwriter, who has worked several times on the Marvel Cinematic Universe, further specifies that this sequel will logically “not have the same tone as the MCU” but will contain “some of its sensibility”. He hopes to grasp the “quirky” universe of Mortal Kombat.
It’s Mortal Kombat. We’ve got people ripping heads off and spitting fire – it’s a weird universe. Let’s take this craziness and make a Mortal Kombat movie that no one expects that will surprise everyone. We’re still very early in the process, but I’m having a lot of fun with this scenario (…).
If Jeremy Slater’s passion is enough to get you excited, We’ll have to wait for the final result to be happy about this new film, which isn’t necessarily highly anticipated as it is.
