This NPD Group published it July 2022 The report covers video game hardware, software and accessories sales in the United States.
Total spending in the video game industry fell 9% year over year to $4.18 billion, according to NPD. Year-to-date spending fell 10% year over year to $30.5 billion, with subscription content remaining the only major spending category growing.
For July, hardware Sales rose 12% year over year to $362 million. However, year-to-date hardware spending fell 7% to $2.5 billion.
The PlayStation 5 leads the market in hardware spending in July and 2022, with the Switch selling the most in both periods. Both PS5 and Xbox Series X/S sales grew by double digits year over year.
MultiVersus is the best seller software July’s title, boosted by sales of Founder’s Packs. Warner Bros. released two of the three best-selling games of the month, with Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga taking the third spot.
Xenoblade Chronicles 3 debut was the fourth best-selling game in July, although digital sales were not included, and was the best-selling game on Switch in July.

Accessories Compared with July 2021, July fell 22% to $148 million. The decline was driven by a decline in gamepad spending. The PS5 DualSense Wireless Controller Midnight Black was the best-selling accessory in July, but the Xbox Elite Series 2 Wireless Controller led the way in accessory sales so far this year.
