SnowRunner begins with a tutorial in Michigan. Following a catastrophic flood, you are called to lend a hand in a maintenance and recovery operation. Start by finding a watchtower in order to have an overview of the environment. Then you will need to find a truck to transport the materials needed to rebuild a bridge. The first minutes set the tone by immersing us in a very American universe. But also by putting us behind the wheel of a Chevrolet pickup, the tires already in the mud.
As much to get to the heart of the matter, SnowRunner sees much bigger than his year, and this, on many points. Starting with the map which goes from 8.25 km to 30 km, a little more than triple. The number of vehicles has also been revised upward, with no less than 40 vehicles available, 18 of which are licensed, but which you will have to unlock by finding or buying them. Where Mudrunner offered only one main activity, Snowrunner now offers 8. Same for the types of cargo that go from 1 to 21. Numbers that say a lot about the life of the game which is much more complete than the was Mudrunner, to the delight of the fans.
SnowRunner is also 11 places to explore, divided into three main sections, Michigan, Alaska and the Tamyr region which is located in Russia. Enough to offer you a lot of exploration to find watchtowers, main or secondary missions or even improvements to customize your trucks from one of your garages. So yes the aesthetic matters, but does not do everything either. And one thing is certain, it certainly will not distort what makes the salt of SnowRunner, its gameplay. As for its year, the game therefore offers us to venture into difficult terrain to perform rescue missions, delivery of construction materials etc … all on more or less narrow paths, with coatings oscillating between the slippery and very slippery. Suffice to say that the task will not be easy as the physics of the game is well done.
Because yes, SnowRunner is also doing a good physical step forward. If MudRunner was already doing things right, here it is even more striking, with a humidity level in the earth which is taken into account. And felt. Walking the same trail on a sunny day and a rainy day will not be learned in the same way. Without forgetting the grooves that you made there during previous passages, which can make the task more difficult than it could have been. Especially since each truck has its strengths and weaknesses, and that driving is really adapt from one machine to another.
You understand, you will get bogged down quite often in SnowRunner, and you will have to play on the power of your engine, but also on the AWD or the differential locker if your machine is equipped to try to get out of it. But that's not all, you will also often use the winch, which can be automatically hooked to the nearest target or manually by choosing different hooking points on your truck as well as a tree or other trunk around you. If you really struggle, you can always return to your garage to take another vehicle to go and save the one that is blocked.
And really the case, you will have no other choice than to recover your vehicle. This will automatically transport him to your garage, causing him to lose his precious cargo. Suffice to say that there is a certain importance to plan your trips. Especially if we take into account the management of gasoline which always evaporates so quickly. Fortunately, you can refuel quite easily and for free. And at worst, you can always attach a trailer containing gasoline to be sure not to run out. However, this option weighs down the vehicle considerably.
Driving when it is a little improved, but remains difficult to learn from the first parts. The direction is not instantaneous, it will take a certain grip to go where you want without taking too much damage. Fortunately we stay at slow speed. To help you, you can count on the different cameras. The internal view which is greatly improved, with the modeling of each dashboard, then an external view in free camera which will help you place your wheels well before crossing an obstacle.
The external view can be played with three zoom levels to get an overview or close-up, but it can also be aligned either with the truck itself or with the trailer attached. All of this will give you enough time to take a look around so you can get through without too much difficulty. Finally … way of speaking is obvious since the difficulty is still part of the gameplay, and without it, we would not take pleasure.
If we have seen so far that the new engine uses physics in a very pleasant way, Snowrunner can also claim to be visually improved. No more dull and dribbling colors of Mudrunner, here the game offers us more colorful environments, visually more vivid but also more detailed. Test on a PS4 FAT, it runs without any worry of losing a frame, regardless of the differences in displays with the day / night cycle, or even weather changes.
Snow, rain, fog, good weather follow one after the other as they wish. Know that if a time of the day bothers you, you can advance the time with a single click to choose a time more appropriate to your desires. Note, however, that it does not control the weather, and that you will take the risk of spending a dry night an afternoon in the rain. Since we are talking about the rain, also note that the windshield wipers still do not work, but anyway, the rain will not have its impact on the windshields. It is also a shame to see that we are not entitled to real rain showers or big thunderstorms.
For the rest, the modeling of the different machines is improved, with particular care given to the different interiors or even to the tires. Yes, because the latter are nevertheless of some importance. We still regret crossing maps that lack life. No animals, no birds, not even a parked passerby or even a farmer waiting for your deliveries, nothing, the total end, giving you the impression of really moving alone with the only purr of your engine, or some discreet music.
The soundscape when it is rather interesting. Some discreet music as said before, which is triggered here or playing it really on the American side with a few songs sounding like this good old rock from the 60s and 70s. Next to a, it will mainly be the speed of your engine, or even the humidity of the earth (yes yes, a is understood in the game, a dry mud does not make the same noise when you ride on it, than a very greasy mud), or the cracking of trees, falling rocks (but which cannot be seen), or the flow of a nearby river.
Finally, Snowrunner also offers a co-op mode on which you can complete the different missions of the game with 3 other friends who like to wade in the slush. also gives you the opportunity to shine in society after having rescued your friend who is still bogged down and who cannot get out of it, or even to form a convoy of specialized vehicles to effectively cross any type ground. You can even bring additional vehicles, towed on dedicated bulk carriers.
In short, you understood, Saber Interactive learned from its past mistakes by offering us a much more successful title than its big brother. Snowrunner is bigger, fuller, improved and will hurt your dexterity as well as your accuracy. A game that will undoubtedly please fans of the series, but which could well win new fans in the discovery of this title. So yes it is true that there are a few faults here and there, but we will gladly pass it on, as the rest is good.
