“My Sunshine” from Japanese filmmaker Hiroshi Okuyama isn’t a perfect film, but visually it’s one of the most magical things Cannes 2024 has to offer.
Hiroshi Okuyama tells the story of two young ice dancers in his film “My Sunshine” in Cannes. In beautiful, calm images full of sun, great landscapes and pastel colors, a kind of love story ultimately unfolds between the two people, who couldn’t be more different in character.
The story is simple and the star of the film is definitely the images. If you want to sit back in the cinema, be captivated by magical shots and let your thoughts wander, “My Sunshine” is the right choice for you.
The story doesn’t matter, “My Sunshine” is about the atmosphere
The story seems to be rather irrelevant in “My Sunshine”. Although the young actors, Keitatsu Koshiyama and Kiara Takanashi, are absolutely lovable and play their roles well, their story doesn’t offer enough intensity to fully grab us.
Almost too much remains unsaid and so we have to understand and read into it, which stimulates our own thoughts and throws us into another world. Does this mean that the film is not exciting enough so that we digress, or does this mean that the film is doing its job properly to make you think?
This question is difficult to answer. What is certain is that the film should be watched in the cinema, because the joy that you definitely get from the pictures cannot be felt on the small screen.
Dramaturgically perhaps a little lacking in tension and the dialogue not always profound enough to carry us through the rather short running time of one and a half hours, the film is far from being perfect. He’s definitely likeable!
The film conveys a feeling of passion, energy, love for matter. Everyone involved seems to be in exactly the right place, and it’s clear to all of the actors that they had fun with the film, in the best possible way. The film always seems warm, always sincere and always absolutely full of life. He is a warm hug.
Even if the film doesn’t necessarily appeal to everyone, I’m sure hopefully everyone can agree that the film has its heart in the right place!
Not a perfect film, but a very likeable one!
With “My Sunshine” director Hiroshi Okuyama creates a visual masterpiece. Dipped in sweet pastel colors and told with a warm heart, “My Sunshine” can take us away from everyday life for a good hour and a half. Although the story of two ice dancers is not sufficiently captivating, the beautiful visual landscape invites you to let your thoughts wander. You can like it, but you can also find it boring.
