With the abundance of the catalog of video-on-demand services, it is not uncommon to miss out on very nice films and series. The Black Mirror creator’s new miniseries has been out for the past few days, and yet hardly anyone has seen this hilarious parody documentary.
Charlie Brooker, the creator of Black Mirror started this amazing project a while ago. Entitled Planet Cunk, this miniseries features Philomena Cunk, a journalist played by Diane Morgan. Its peculiarity ? It aims to retrace human history by touring the planet, but the problem is that it’s abysmal stupidity.
What is strong about Planète Cunk is his propensity to throw silly punchlines at us, without forgetting to bring a touch of poetry from time to time. If you stick to this very special style of the mockumentary, it’s hard not to recognize the weirdest production of the moment.
Planet Cunk, the risky bet?
This British miniseries stars an inhabited Diane Morgan. The tongue-in-cheek humor is really zesty and there really is enough to make you have a good time. But for this it is necessary to stick to a very different proposal from the programs that we generally see on VOD platforms. The spectator unfolds in lush landscapes and discovers emblematic places of the planet. Diane Morgan, remarkably authentic, faces eminent professors and asks questions, each more silly than the next, and doesn’t hesitate to reference pop culture. Do you think writing is more important than rap metal?
Everything is obviously scripted, but it’s very funny to see how these specialists collapse (they play the game well) while their interlocutor rants about their nonsense. It’s a bit like we took the actor out of Idiocracy to put him in this parody documentary. For example, she can discover a connection between prehistoric paintings and Fast and Furious 7, only to then explain to us that the author of those illustrations is surely dead by now. Planète Cunk will touch lovers of cultivated writing with his English humor. And the implementation with the various pieces presented is remarkable and offers a beautiful journey beyond the burlesque aspect.
