According to a recent report, Netflix It is currently looking into how to make more money from its games, and is reportedly considering introducing ads and in-app purchases.
That’s news from the Wall Street Journal (paywall), which apparently spoke to “people familiar with discussions” currently taking place at Netflix. Various suggestions have been floated as to how the streaming company could make more revenue from its games, with notable ideas including adding ads, in-app purchases and even charging premium prices for certain games, these sources said. Ads will only appear on the ad-supported tier, and it’s unclear how in-app purchases will work; presumably this is for games it self-publishes, rather than those it licenses.

Currently, its game library is free for users, which means if you have any subscription tier, you can play the games it offers. These include indie games like Oxenfree 2: Lost Signals and Death’s Door, as well as more well-known games like GTA: Trilogy. While there are currently only a few games to choose from, more are coming soon, such as Hades, one of the best roguelite games.
Still, Netflix has a lot of work to do if it wants to become the Netflix of gaming. While that statistic is somewhat outdated now, as of August 2022, less than 1% of Netflix subscribers played its games on a daily basis. That’s not an encouraging percentage, and considering the only real big name in GTA Remastered, I personally don’t think it’s much higher at the moment. If Netflix introduced ads or in-app purchases before it had a fully fleshed out library, I don’t think it would be popular with subscribers. For now, we can only wait and see.
