Netflix has a surprise for you just before the 2024 Oscars. The streaming service makes the nominated animated film “NIMONA” available to you free of charge. We’ll show you how you can see it.
- Netflix is offering you one of its nominated films for free at the 2024 Oscars.
- “NIMONA” can currently be legally streamed on YouTube.
- Netflix is setting an example with this campaign and is giving Disney a swipe.
We actually know Netflix as a big, money-hungry streaming provider that charges additional fees for every little thing. But just before the Oscars, the streamer shows its generous side and treats us to a free film that is nominated for best animated feature film at the 2024 Oscars.
There is a catch, however, because Netflix only released the film with an English audio track and there are only English subtitles. Nevertheless, it’s worth watching “NIMONA”.
“NIMONA” is a science fiction film based on the graphic novel of the same name by ND Stevenson. The film tells the story of Ballister Boldheart, who was about to be knighted by Queen Valerin. But the queen is killed during the ceremony and Ballister is believed to be her murderer.
The chaos-causing Nimona is now supposed to help Ballister clear his name again. That’s why they work together to bring disorder into the system so that Ballister can return to the knightly order.
Why is Netflix releasing the film for free on YouTube?
The genesis of “NIMONA” is complicated and could have been the motivation for Netflix to make the film available for free on YouTube. The US company Fox Animation originally secured the rights to the film adaptation of “NIMONA”. Fox commissioned Blue Sky Studios, its own studio at the time, to make the film.
But when Disney took over the company in spring 2019, the studio was scrapped. Netflix stepped in and continued production of “NIMONA.” The fact that the streaming service is now making the film available for free is a smart move to drum up advertising for the film shortly before the Oscars. It’s also a bit of a dig at Disney, who didn’t believe in the project and now have competition from their own Oscar-nominated film “Elementels.”
