Netflix announced it, and it’s going to crack down. Account sharing will be ended once and for all, the VOD giant is cleaning up.
2023 will surely mark the history of the Netflix platform, after suffering a recent loss of speed, the N Rouge has decided to review its policies and subscriptions. Not so long ago, he mainly offered an offer at a low price, but bombarded with pubs. A sleight of hand that obviously didn’t work and turned down the offer.
At the same time, Netflix had announced that it was addressing the account sharing issue, which is said to have affected around 100 million viewers. A massive number considering the streaming leader has 223 million subscribers. The loss is therefore colossal and Netflix is pulling out the fangs.
Netflix will charge you for sharing
It is well done, therefore, that from early 2023 Netflix will deploy a system to prevent the sharing of passwords, and therefore accounts, by forcing its users to pay additional costs if they wish to share their identifiers. The system will be deployed in the United States from early 2023 and will gradually be rolled out across the globe.
We don’t yet know exactly when it will arrive in France, but it should certainly appear in mid-2023.
This new layer of protection against account sharing should work to identify users’ IP, their activity on the platform, and the media used to watch Netflix.
According to the managers, this system could allow Netflix to recoup no less than $721 million. Quite a sum.
However, those responsible are aware that this will not be popular, but believe that eventually users will get used to it and agree to play along, as co-CEO Ted Sarandos puts it:
Make no mistake, I don’t think consumers will love it right away. It was the company’s job to ensure that users found interest in paying for the right to the Netflix service.
So the company is keeping their feet on the ground, and as the story progresses, they might consider some service improvements to pass the pill and get users to subscribe. And for those who think that it would be enough to look elsewhere, you should know that the problem of account sharing is currently being closely observed by all similar services. Be it Disney+, Paramount or even HBO Max, they all have their eye on this thorny issue that causes the loss of staggering amounts of money. It now remains to be seen how they intend to rectify the situation and if users will find them when they arrive.
