The Netflix offering is filled with in-house productions or current films from the last 20 years. But does the streaming service also have classics to offer? Yes – you just have to look!

The Netflix homepage is individualized and actually tailored to your taste. If you watch a lot of reality shows, Netflix will increasingly offer them to you. Do you love action films? Netflix takes you to other representatives of the genre. But it’s worth diving even deeper into the world of Netflix’s offerings.

It is known that Netflix is the home of popular series such as “Stranger Things” or “Wednesday”, but lovers of classic films usually stay away from Netflix and try to take a detour to subscribe to the cinephile streaming service Criterion Channel in Germany. But be careful, even on Netflix some classics are gathering dust in the streaming cellar!

The film story doesn’t begin in the year 2000

In the USA, Netflix has been gradually adding classic films to its program since January 2024. It all started with titles from 1974, which are now celebrating their 50th anniversary. These included films such as “Chinatown”, “The Great Gatsby” with Robert Redford and “A Man Sees Red”.

Now these films have been replaced by titles from 1984, including “Footloose”, “Amadeus” and “Conan the Destroyer”. Anniversary titles from 1994 and 2004 follow in July and October, but these can hardly be described as classics.

Still, this special release, dubbed “Milestone Movies,” makes it clear that Netflix very rarely promotes films that are over 20 years old. For the streaming service, even “Green Book” from 2018 is considered a modern classic!

Contrary to expectations, Netflix also offers the “Classic Films” categorywhich, in addition to well-known highlights such as “Back and the Future” and “Schindler’s List”, also contains Italian romantic comedies from the fifties and twenties silent films from Sweden.

A little treasure trove for film fans whose existence can hardly be explained. What is certain is that Netflix would probably never have suggested these titles to you on their own. If you want to sink even deeper into the Netflix abyss, you should use the streaming service’s secret codes.
