Netflix is about to launch a new alternative history anime “Leviathan”, and there is a group of talented producers behind this anime.

Animation studio Orange returns with a new 3DCG series, Leviathan, based on the 2009 novel of the same name, written by Scott Westerfield and illustrated by Keither Thompson. Both the series and the book are an alternate history version of World War I, where the Central Powers, namely the German Empire, Austria-Hungary, the Ottoman Empire, and Bulgaria (known as Clankers in the book), fight the war using massive mechas and war machines, as well as artificial creatures designed for combat. Essentially, it’s like World War I, but with a steampunk twist.

You can check out the first trailer for the series above, and it does give a fairly lengthy introduction to the show, just without any voice acting. It also has some pretty amazing talent involved – the composers are Nobuko Toda and Kazuma Jinnai, the composing duo who have worked on games like Metal Gear Solid 4, Final Fantasy XIV, and Halo 5.

The much-loved Joe Hisaishi, best known for his work on Studio Ghibli titles like Howl’s Moving Castle and Spirited Away, also wrote the original songs for Leviathan. Beyond that, Orange is a solid animation studio with a history of producing series like Gunslinger, Alien, and Kingdom of Light. It’s safe to say that overall, this is a very strong team.

Netflix explains the series: “In 1914, on the eve of war, a fugitive prince and a girl in disguise meet aboard the bioengineered airship HMS Leviathan, changing the course of history forever.”

Unfortunately, Leviathan doesn’t have a firm release date yet, but Netflix currently plans to release it sometime in 2025. Let’s just hope that Delicious in Dungeon isn’t a flash in the pan and that the streamer will release Leviathan on a weekly basis as well (RIP Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure Part 6).
