Netflix’s next film tells a harrowing story: What if there was a huge socioeconomic divide in London?

Netflix has released the trailer for an exciting sci-fi movie called Kitchen. It’s set in a dystopian London, where socioeconomic divides have never been wider and police use force to disrupt communities. Well, not too different from actual London.

Unlike the horrors of real London, Events in the Kitchen was written and directed by Daniel Kaluuya. Not only was he the star of No, Get Out and Sicario, but he also wrote some episodes of Skins and a fantastic short called Swarm. After starring in some great movies, it seems Kaluuya is back behind the camera to show off his skills.

The film also stars Kano – and he’s brilliant! You may know him from Top Boy and of course his outstanding contribution to British grime music. It’s worth noting that the movie also looks gorgeous – it’s obviously science fiction, but it’s not too far-fetched to be true. I guess that’s the point, right? Showcasing a London that is recognizable both in appearance and social issues compared to our own. It looks great, and in fact it’s won awards – yes, the film has won the British Independent Film Awards for Best Effects and Best Production Design.

“Kitchen” will be released on Netflix on January 19th. At 107 minutes long, it’s a great couch movie to watch with friends and loved ones. So yes, put it on your calendar! One to watch in the new year.
