The PlayStation Stars loyalty program could lose interest in the coming weeks. Sony Interactive Entertainment warns PS5 and PS4 players about upcoming changes.
After a long outage of a month, PlayStation Stars was restored last July. This loyalty program allows you to earn points by playing or making purchases on the PS Store. A feature appreciated by the community, since the points accumulated can be exchanged for complete games. This therefore requires a certain investment, but Sony announces that it will tighten the screws from next October.
PlayStation Stars will soon be less advantageous
A new Astro Bot campaign lets you earn PlayStation Stars bonus points when you pre-order. It’s always a catch to take advantage of because in a few weeks it won’t be the same. In the last few hours, Sony has been sending out emails to members informing them of the upcoming terms and conditions of the PS Stars program. We got it ourselves, as you can see in the screenshot below. And it’s not good news for PS5 and PS4 players.
The new PlayStation Stars terms of use, which will come into force on October 24, 2024, will introduce a limit on the points you can earn. Subscriptions obtained from this date will expire within 12 months from the end of the month in which they are visible in your PS Stars account. In order not to put too much pressure on program participants, Sony is making a small gesture, as the expiration period for points earned before October 24 will remain 24 months. But there is a second modification that puts consumers at an even greater disadvantage.
From March 1, 2025, Sony will review “the definition of eligible purchases to exclude all subscription payments made on PlayStation Store”. What’s it hiding? If you subscribe to or renew PS Plus or any other subscription, PlayStation Stars points will no longer be offered.
Mandatory changes to maintain access to PS Stars
All of this obviously went down badly with PS5 and PS4 players and these new changes are already annoying. “It’s stupid not to give points for PS+ subscriptions”; “It’s really nonsense! I want them to set up a system for collecting points on physical games like Nintendo does.”; “Greed at its finest”; “It’s really lame” Can we read on the web? It is all the more annoying that Sony is forcing PlayStation Stars users to accept these changes.
And what happens if you reject these new conditions? Your membership in the PS Stars loyalty program will be automatically terminated. “Please log in to PlayStation Stars via the PlayStation app or online from October 24, 2024. You will then be prompted to read and accept the updated terms and conditions to remain a member of PlayStation Stars, or decline them and cancel your PlayStation Stars membership. If you do not make a selection, your membership will be considered cancelled until you accept the updated terms and conditions.”From then on, you will lose access to the program and all associated benefits, including PlayStation Stars points earned through campaigns or purchases.
