We write this every second announcement, but: The leaks were correct. Dead Space is actually returning – as a remake. As part of the EA Play Livestream 2021, the new edition of the 2008 classic was officially announced. There was only a tiny teaser, but of course we got more information from EA.
What kind of game will Dead Space be?
You will hardly guess: Dead Space will be a remake of Dead Space, which was released in 2008. The new edition should inherit the strengths of the original and lead into a new era. Unlike a remaster, the new Dead Space was completely developed from scratch instead of just turning up the texture resolution and adding chic lighting. In terms of content, however, the remake follows its roots:
- As engineer Isaac Clarke you land on the supposedly abandoned space station USG Ishimura.
- Murderous necromorphs are lurking in the hallways.
- Isaac alternately uses each tool as a weapon – the plasma cutter returns.
- If you want to play smart, Necromorphs will primarily shoot the limbs, never the head first.
- Isaac is looking for his girlfriend Nicole, who is said to be hidden somewhere on the ship.
So the starting point sounds identical to the original. To what extent the plot follows other paths and possibly also leads to different endings, we cannot yet estimate.
In terms of gameplay everything seems to stay the same: Dead Space becomes survival horror in which you have to manage ammunition cleverly and survive in an absolutely deadly environment.

As I said, the teaser for the new Dead Space is only a few seconds long, but at least it shows the most important cornerstones of the remake: Isaac Clarke, the Ishimura’s corridors, the necromorphs:

Who is developing the game?
Visceral Games, the original team behind the original Dead Space, was shut down by EA in 2017. Dead Space inventor Glen Schofield is currently working on The Callisto Protocol, which in many ways also looks like a modern reissue of the old Dead Space horror and is due to appear in 2022.
The new Dead Space, however, is from EA Motive who designed the Star Wars: Battlefront 2 and Star Wars: Squadrons campaigns in recent years.
For which platforms will the Dead Space Remake be released?
Dead Space will be a pure next or current gen game. So it will no longer appear for PS4 and Xbox One, but exclusively for PC, PS5 und Xbox Series X|S.

EA has not yet communicated a final release date. Since there has only been a tiny teaser so far and the marketing phases for EA’s large triple A productions are usually quite long, we do not expect a release until the end of 2022 at the earliest – possibly not until 2023 or 2024.
