While Overwatch 2 is struggling with all sorts of problems shortly before its start in Early Access, the free mech shooter has Gundam Evolution has blossomed into a real insider tip for fans of team shooters.
Already shortly after the release on Thursday at 04:00 in the morning over 56,000 players online at the same time on Steam. We explain to you what’s behind the latest hype game.
Overwatch mit Mechs
What is Gundam Evolution about anyway? Just like Overwatch, Gundam Evolution is a first-person shooter and is played in 6vs6. The players choose from a variety of different Mobile Suits or Gundams.
These mechs are all from the popular sci-fi universe Gundam, in which people climb into huge fighting machines and which has spawned tons of series and movies over the last 43 years.
All Mobile Suits have different armaments, skills and Ultimates: Some, like the Barbatos (a Gundam from the Iron-Blooded Orphans anime series), use a spear-like melee weapon. Others, like the aptly named GM Sniper II, use ranged weapons. And of course there are also hybrids that rely on a mixture of short- and long-range weapons.
There are three game modes available at launch:
- Point Capture: As in Overwatch, you have to collect and hold points until a loading bar is completely filled.
- Destruction: Here you have to place or defuse a bomb, similar to CS:GO or Valorant.
- Domination: Here you have to hold certain areas of the map to earn points.

Mixed opinions from Steam users
Despite strong player numbers, Gundam Evolution currently only has 69 percent positive ratings on Steam. The biggest point of criticism is currently the technology. Many players complain that they suffer from crashes. What makes it worse is that there is no reconnect, so you can’t start a new game for five minutes after each crash.
Many players also name the 403 error as a reason for criticism: This only says that the servers are offline. Gundam Evolution was released for download yesterday at noon, the servers but didn’t go online until 4am this morning.
But there is also a lot of praise from the players. This is how a player writes:
I’ve been to the previous playtests and this game is fantastic.
Cheers to the Einsteins for being illiterate and giving the game negative reviews a day before release, an impressive lack of reading comprehension.
This game is really fun, I keep getting blown away by the gameplay and suit moves, it feels great the way it plays.
The Download von Gundam Evolution can be found on Steam, the download size is 18.1 GB.
