The next Mass Effect has a first trailer
Last update: 13th December
What’s new? Expert box and more details from the trailer added
At the annual N7 Day, more precisely on November 7th, 2020, not only was the remaster of the original Mass Effect trilogy announced in the form of the Mass Effect: Legendary Edition, there was also a first, brief reference to the next part of the series.

The remaster is coming & new part in the works
At this year’s Game Awards it was a first teaser trailer is shown, which should bring tears to the eyes of fans – because the new Mass Effect is set in the Milky Way again and guarantees a reunion with old friends.
However, Andromeda is apparently not completely excluded either. At least this is indicated by a tweet from Project Director Michael Gamble, to which a reader has drawn our attention:

Elena hoped in her column that Bioware Andromeda wouldn’t drop, while Fabiano wished for a fresh start. How well the middle ground between old and new works in the upcoming Mass Effect remains to be seen.
We know that about the new Mass Effect
Much is not yet known about the next Mass Effect: It will be made without veteran developer Casey Hudson, who left BioWare last week. Besides, it doesn’t even have a real name so far, the trailer only mentions »The Next Mass Effect«.
However, the almost two-minute video is full of details that indicate that the game is a sequel to the original trilogy:
- At the very beginning of the video, the Milky Way and the Andromeda Galaxy can be seen, the camera flies unerringly into our home galaxy.
- At the beginning, the trailer shows space and debris flying around. This is probably not the Citadel, as we first assumed, but a destroyed mass portal.
-
In official Concept Art a damaged mass relay was seen earlier and is being repaired.
- The Reaper sound effect can clearly be heard during the tracking shot. The Arcturus station is also mentioned, which was also destroyed by the Reapers in Mass Effect 3.
- In the next scene we see a person climbing a mountain in a snowy landscape – which is probably a destroyed Reaper.
- The person hides the part of an N7 helmet out of the snow that could possibly belong to Commander Shepard – at least that is what her knowing smile suggests.
-
At the end of the trailer it is revealed that it is the Asari Liara, a loyal companion of Commander Shepard. In the background is the spaceship from the first concept art to the game. In addition to that, there are other silhouettes that definitely show a salarian. The other two figures are harder to see, it could be a human and a turian. Is Liara looking for Shepard with her own team and maybe even more old friends will return?
At the end of Mass Effect 3, players could choose between three different paths: destroy all synthetic life, take control of the reaper, or combine the DNA of all organic and synthetic life forms to create peace. What is shown in the trailer suggests that the “destroy” ending is likely to be canon.
Assessment by expert Steffi: I’ve spent more days and nights with Mass Effect than is probably healthy. Unfortunately, I never really got warm with Andromeda, although I really enjoyed the first few hours. That’s why I’m sitting between the chairs – on the one hand, I wish that more will be extracted from the exciting ideas of ME: A. On the other hand, I’ll never get enough of Shepard’s story. And I believe that Bioware also wants to try a balancing act.
The first few seconds of the trailer and the tweet from the Ryder voice actor are a very clear indication to me: The Milky Way and Andromeda will somehow be connected in the next part. It will be exciting to see when the new Mass Effect plays – thanks to the long lifespan of asari and kroganers, Bioware would have some leeway here to incorporate old friends like Liara or Wrex.
This time, Bioware can no longer avoid the decision to declare an end to the official canon, as they did in ME: A. Since the blue and green ends would each have too great an impact on the universe, only the red path remains as a logical choice. I hope we will find out what happened to Shepard after the Reaper was destroyed.
The release is still a long way off
However, fans will have to wait a little longer before the story of the space saga continues. In the description under the Trailer on YouTube it is written:
“An experienced team at BioWare is in the early stages of the upcoming Mass Effect part and we look forward to showing you where we are going next!”
The fact that the project is still in an »early stage« should confirm that we will have to wait a few more years for the continuation of the Shepard trilogy.
