With the Navimow I series, Segway is launching new robotic lawnmowers. They do not require a boundary wire and are said to be suitable for all gardens.
Robotic lawn mowers without boundary wires have been on the rise for around a year. We have already tested two such models, the Ecovacs Goat and Mammotion Luba – the technology works.
The freedom from wires is a real advantage, especially in larger or more complicated gardens, as it eliminates the laborious task of laying the boundary wire. Segway is another manufacturer of “wireless” robotic lawnmowers. The company will be launching two new models in 2024 – for properties with up to 500 and 800 square meters of lawn.
Navimow i105E and Navimow i108E can manage gradients of up to 30 degrees, offer a cutting height of between 2 and 6 centimeters and a battery life of 60 and 120 minutes respectively. They are connected via Bluetooth, WLAN and optionally via mobile communications. The latter is practical if you don’t have WiFi in the garden.
For all gardens, even with tall trees
On properties with tall trees, robotic lawnmowers without cables can sometimes reach their limits. Ecovacs is therefore relying on distributed navigation beacons, and Mammotion is solving the problem this year with additional “3D vision” that works with the base station. Segway also uses the latter navigation technology to be able to determine the location precisely, even in tall trees.

As with the competition, maps can be created by driving over the lawn using a smartphone. According to the manufacturer, the device regularly changes its mowing direction to protect the lawn.
The integrated artificial intelligence should also help the robotic lawnmower to avoid objects. According to Segway, the fisheye camera can detect and avoid a wide variety of objects – including toys and animals.
