Blade Runner from 1982 is one of the great pioneers of cyberpunk in cinema. The film is based on Philip K. Dick’s novel Do androids dream of electric sheep?
and shaped the genre with depth and rainy scenes in neon-flooded urban canyons. The 2017 sequel Blade Runner 2049 is also considered a favorite of critics and has received various film awards, including two Oscars.
Although the film failed at the box office, Amazon dares to tackle the demanding material, as we reported in February 2022. Now the contracts are in the towel.
Amazon is realizing the futuristic dystopia as a completed series called Blade Runner 2099. The story is set, pre-production is starting. The first film’s director, Ridley Scott, is serving as executive producer, with showrunner Silka Luisa (Shining Girls, Halo) writing the story.

In statements, the creators of Blade Runner 2099 say they are aware of the high expectations of a sequel to the much-loved story. Amazon executive Vernon Sanders told Deadline:
The original Blade Runner, directed by Ridley Scott, is considered one of the greatest and most influential science fiction films of all time. We are excited to introduce Blade Runner 2099 to our Prime Video customers worldwide.

Blade Runner 2099 is said to be a so-called Limited Series
become, i.e. offer a completed action. The series will be released worldwide for Amazon’s Prime Video streaming service.
A release period is not yet known. Since the series is still in pre-production, fans will have to be patient for a while.
