Konami recently announced a new line of Silent Hill 2 costumes in partnership with Los Angeles-based clothing company Online Ceramics. While the collection of t-shirts, hoodies, and more caught the eye of many fashion-forward horror hounds, others found themselves intrigued by this new line of high-end gamer apparel.
The heated designer debate took place mostly on Twitter, with collaborations Announced for the first time via the official Konami corporate account. A quick scroll down to the replies reveals a mix of outrage, memes, and disbelief at what was on offer.
“Damn, if you want someone to throw some crap on a t-shirt and sell it for $300, Konami hire me,” Alleng wrote, he went on to hastily create a mock T-shirt, poking fun at the existence of online ceramic URLs on the clothing line, and the hastily slapped images of classic horror films in their eyes.Others continue to follow their example By making their own analog garments and posting them to share with their digital counterparts.
It’s not all negative though. A quick glance at the retweeted citations reveals that many online users are actually impressed with some of the fruits of Online Ceramics’ labor. love for pants and many kinds of shirt Rich, even reluctant.
Siobhán Casey, whose excellent work you may have seen on this site recently, falls into this group himself. “Very few video game costumes are interesting, 90% are just logos/key art. These tap into a very particular grunge/haunted vibe to give the IP an alt-90s grunge/Twin Peaks/X-Files cultural cache of Silent Hill Emulate and deserve”.
“I can put these on my jerk bassist boyfriend’s floor and they won’t look out of place. I’d even go so far as to say that this is the first time since The Room that Konami has really demonstrated an understanding of Silent Hill’s unique strengths “
However, if there’s a real tragedy to both lovers and haters of these new designs, it’s that most of them probably can’t afford some of the more radical offerings. A quick look at the online store for these new Silent Hill 2 titles reveals some eye-watering prices. A Dead Wife T-shirt is $55, a hoodie of the same design is $120, and those sleek pants are $270. Other designs may cost more or less, but this is a rough estimate for the series. Those who think Dead or Alive and Total War are expensive for their scope probably haven’t experienced the woes of a stylish game.
