WhatsApp is developing a new function to check shared images and other content for fakes. Why this feature is useful and overdue.
Who hasn’t experienced it yet? The Internet is full of misleading advertising banners or fake news that often seem harmless and then lead us to completely different, often dubious or made-up content. You can receive such messages on WhatsApp from unknown senders, but you can also receive them from acquaintances who have unknowingly forwarded them. The messenger wants to protect you from this with new features.
WhatsApp has been testing a way to check linked content for authenticity for some time now. You can use the function to search for similar content or its original version via Google to check the source and authenticity.
Google search is intended to uncover manipulated images
But something new is supposed to be added now Report from the fan blog “WABetaInfo”that you can also use this function to check shared images for authenticity. The fact that this search function is also extended to shared visuals makes all the more sense in the age of fake memes.
You can access the function by opening an image, then clicking on the three dots in the right corner, and then selecting “Search on the Internet”. However, the feature is currently only available to users of beta version 2.24.21.31 of WhatsApp for Android. It is still unclear when it will be rolled out to everyone.
