With the Windows 10 May 2020 Update, also known as Windows 10 Version 2004 or Windows 10 20H1, Microsoft's operating system should become faster – at least on certain hardware, as Windows Latest reports.
Accordingly, older HDDs (hard disks) in particular will benefit from the upcoming feature update.
How does Microsoft achieve better performance?
According to Microsoft, Windows 10 version 2004 improves functions for the so-called search index. If the data carrier activity is particularly high, the indexing process should be reduced in order to relieve the data carrier as much as possible.
What is indexing on Windows?
When indexing, files and other system contents are cataloged – they are entered in the index. Windows creates so-called metadata, such as certain keywords, file size, creation date, description, file path and much more. These can then be found more easily and quickly via an index during a search.
But the index is not only relevant for the Windows search. Various programs such as File Explorer, Groove and Outlook also use it.
The indexing is carried out continuouslyto always be up to date. This does cost resources, but since fast SSDs are already being used for a large number of systems, this is usually of little importance. It looks different with HDD hard drives.

Why do HDDs benefit the most?
HDDs are usually significantly slower than SSDs. If they are burdened by intensive activities, additional indexing in the background can quickly lead to significant drops in performance.
Windows Latest did a self-test and found that the behavior on HDDs with Windows 10 20H1 improved noticeably. »Windows 10 May 2020 Update actually feels faster if your hardware is equipped with an HDD.«
By the way: The indexing function can also be deactivated manually, thereby eliminating the advantages of searching. Deactivation works as follows:
- Open command line (Windows key + R)
- Enter and confirm »services.msc« (Enter)
- Search for Windows Search and open it with a double click
- select »Deactivated« under start type
- select "End" under service status, accept (no restart required)
Further improvements with Win 10 20H2
Microsoft is planning for Windows 10 20H2 (probably called the autumn update) further improvements of the search function respectively the index, according to Windows Latest. An algorithm should then recognize when the file indexing should best be carried out, i.e. when the system is not used.
When does the Windows 10 May 2020 update come?
As the name suggests, the time should come in May, provided there are no unexpected delays caused by the Corona crisis. It is not yet possible to say exactly when in May. It is already available to participants in the Windows Insider program.
