As expected, The Witcher 3’s REDkit modding tool has given modders the opportunity to try to do a lot of complex things they couldn’t do before. The latest tool appears to be the first real attempt ever to give the entire map full seasons, and its creators say they plan to see if they can make the time of year switch dynamically in the future.
Yes, while you wait for more news on The Witcher 4, stop desperately trying to decipher the extra lines that another modder added to The Witcher 3’s best ending the other day. As far as I can tell, this goes a step further than the very good individual mods that let you see what a snowy Toussaint looks like, for example.

Inspired by the mod Seasons of Skyrim from a few years ago, which used very impressive scripting to let you experience dynamically switching climates, and CD Projekt’s latest REDkit mod challenge, which asks people to show the studio “how autumn changes the continents”, modder ianjoseph1986 has put together “Weather and Seasons for the Continents”.
“I started by editing a few textures from scratch and ended up making a full weather and season system for The Witcher 3,” the modder wrote. “I re-textured nearly every plant and tree in the game for each season, and I can’t upload enough pictures to show off the different biomes.” [and] Weather changes [do] Be fair to change.”
There’s one key element to Seasons of Skyrim that modders haven’t been able to replicate yet – though they do say it’s something they’re still working on – having the seasons switch dynamically, without the player having to do anything. As of right now, the mod comes with different files for four different seasons – and currently requires some existing mods, like the Toussaint mod I mentioned earlier, to make certain areas appear wintery – you’ll have to go into the game files manually if you want to change the season you see in-game.
It will be interesting to see if modders can actually make these dynamic changes work, as Skyrim mods rely on some pretty advanced modding tools that might not be possible with TW3 replication, but it’s a good thing they’re trying to push the envelope.
