Nintendo’s Independent world A video was recently released summarizing the best-selling indie games of 2021 (thanks to Kotaku), which has some real gems. Although we are not sure about the ranking, there are both familiar faces and new challengers in the video.
The complete list in the order of appearance is as follows:
- Network shadow
- Unboxing
- Tetris Effect: Connect
- Stick War: The Game
- Curse of death
- Andre Lily
- Doki Doki Literature Club Plus!
- Cave exploration 2
- 96 road
- Subnautica/Subnautica: below zero
- Littlewood
- Island Democracy Machine Edition
- Slime Rancher: Portable Edition
- Eastward
- Axiom Edge 2
Some of these games are not surprising. Tetris Effect, Spelunky 2 and Subnautica are just some of the better-known names. But alongside them are newer IPs such as Unpacking, Ender Lilies and Eastward. All of these games have very good reviews, but so far they have not been confirmed in terms of sales.
Elsewhere on the list, Slime Rancher is still a phenomenon on Switch. After the first game sold so hot, people seemed to be keen on Axiom Verge 2. The only game on the list that is a bit of a headache is Stick Fight: The Game. The name is not that familiar in the critics, but it still seems to sell like a blockbuster, probably by word of mouth.
But no matter how you slice it, 2021 will be a very good year for independent developers on the Switch. And the latest Indie World Direct also gave us something worth looking forward to in the future, such as the brawl action between the promising RPG Xinghai and River City Girl 2.
