Nintendo is making a lot of changes in the test center at its headquarters in Washington state. Many contractual partners lose contracts as a result, but new jobs are also created.
The wave of restructuring does not stop at Nintendo of America either. There are currently at least no layoffs at Nintendo itself, but many contractual partners of the test center for games and hardware are being kicked out.
Contractors at Nintendo of America who feel undervalued and underpaid have long called on the company to make them full-time employees rather than exploit loopholes in seasonal work requirements. Now some partners are completely out, including many with many years of experience.
A statement from Nintendo says:
Nintendo of America (NOA) has reorganized its product testing functions to achieve greater global integration in game development. The changes will also allow NOA to better coordinate national testing procedures and procedures.
As a result of these changes, some contractor contracts will end and a significant number of new full-time jobs will be created. For all expiring contracts, contractors will offer severance packages with the support of NOA and provide support during the transition.
We are very grateful to the contractors who will be leaving us for the important contributions they have made to our company and warmly thank them for their hard work and service to Nintendo.
A total of 120 jobs will be affected, although it is still unclear how many of these will actually be eliminated and how many will be converted directly into full-time jobs at Nintendo. At the moment we can only speculate about the reasons for the restructuring.
