After things became a little quieter about the Switch 2 recently, there are now fresh rumors about the console again. Does this possibly get magnetic Joy-Cons?
The Switch 2 has been prominently featured in the rumor mill in recent months, as the launch is said to have been imminent. Nothing came of it at first, because in the end the planned release of the Switch successor was postponed internally to the coming year 2025 – and that means the official reveal is still a long time coming.
After all this chaos, things had become quieter about the new Nintendo hardware, which, according to reports, will have a larger screen. Now the good piece is the subject of new speculations again! The focus is on the Joy-Con controllers, which will probably also be available on the Switch successor.
The new reports originate from the Spanish gaming website Vandal, according to their information, the new Nintendo console will no longer use a rail-mounted system as before to connect the Joy-Cons to the console itself. Instead, the Joy-Cons will in future be attached to the Switch 2 screen using a magnetic holder.
The fact that there could be something to this plan is suggested by a Nintendo patent registered in September last year, which revolves around a new joystick system that uses magnetic fields instead of physical contacts. The joystick is intended to transmit its signal to the console based on the strength of the magnetic connection.
If the system is actually implemented this way on the Switch, another question should also be answered: previous Joy-Cons on the current Switch are unlikely to be compatible with the console successor. The current Switch Pro Controller should still be able to be used with the new console.
The sources mentioned are manufacturers involved in the manufacturing process who are said to have already been able to hold the new Nintendo console in their hands. The article also repeats the release period in spring 2025 that was last mentioned in the rumor mill. According to Brazilian journalist Pedro Henrique Lutti Lippe, a reveal should be possible as early as June 2024; This journalist had already leaked various Nintendo announcements in advance in the past.
