Nintendo has reason to celebrate: The Switch has broken the sound barrier of 80 million sold consoles. Animal Crossing is also getting a slice of fame.
After one of the most profitable quarters, Nintendo has now reached another milestone with the Switch: 80 million consoles have been brought to gamers since the release on March 3, 2017. Fun fact about this: Around 40% of Switch owners also have a copy of Animal Crossing: New Horizon.
The third quarter of 2020 was the second best quarter for the Japanese group since the company was founded. Previously, only the third quarter of 2008 had generated more income. At that time Nintendo had two hot irons in the fire with the Wii and the DS. This time, with 11.57 million units sold, the Switch alone accounted for almost 72% of revenues in the hardware segment. Hardware sales made up more than half of the group’s revenues in that period.
Software sales also saw a large 17% increase to 75.85 million units in the third quarter. The best seller was once again a first-party Nintendo title. Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity has been purchased a total of 3.5 million times. As expected, most sales are digital, with the group also recording an increase of 58%.
Nintendo also released updated sales for its best-selling titles. Mario Kart 8: Deluxe leads the way with 33.41 million lifetime sales, followed by Animal Crossing: New Horizons with 31.18 million. Although New Horizons is less than a year old, it is well on its way to becoming the best-selling game on the Switch. Almost 39% of Switch owners own a copy! Pokemon Sword / Shield has also passed the 20 million mark, making it the first Pokemon game since Gold / Silver on the list.
