Nintendo's global president, Shuntaro Furukawa, hasn't seen the end of console domination at any time during this decade.
Although Reggie Fils-Aime, the company's former North American president, had previously predicted that cloud gaming would be the main way to play games in the next decade, Furukawa took a different view. In an interview with the Japanese publication Nintendo Everything, he said that it may take us a decade to see cloud gaming surpassing traditional dedicated consoles.
A person in charge of Nintendo told Nikkei: "In the ten years from now, cloud gaming may be of public interest, but at this point in time, I don't think dedicated hardware will disappear."
To date, Nintendo has released many cloud games on its Switch console, including the cloud game version of Assassin's Creed Odyssey, which is still unique to Japan.
He continued: "There is still a long way to go to really know the results." That being said, it doesn't make sense to focus on game methods that can only be used on dedicated hardware. Once the listeners start saying they can play on other consoles or smartphones, it's done. "
However, Furukawa said the company remains keen to embrace the new technology.
"What I don't want the public to misunderstand is that we have not given up support for new technologies-we are constantly researching and developing. Our hardware development team will evaluate the various new technologies available so far and consult our software developers "If they determine that a technology can be used with the game, then they will take advantage of it. We will not change this basic approach."
This includes finding new uses for technologies previously used by Nintendo, such as augmented reality.
"For AR, this is definitely one of the many aspects we are interested in. We are currently working on interesting ways to take advantage of it."
