Nioh Director Wants to Create An Open-World Game for Next-Gen Consoles

Recently an interview with Nioh director Fumihiko Yasuda shared some interesting details about the director’s future plans including the possibility of Nioh 3.

The interview with The Gamer shared currently according to Yasuda “there really isn’t a plan for Nioh 3 at this point”, but the focus is on new projects. Team Ninja wants to gain more experiences and skills by working on different projects. But not all hope is lost for the Nioh franchise, Yasuda did share:

I would like to go back to the series at some point, utilize all the experience and new skills that we gain from some new projects, and then potentially, go back into the series at that point, and create an even greater game to surpass Nioh and Nioh 2 and to create something even better.

Open-World Game on Next-Gen Consoles

So what’s next for the Nioh 2 developer? Yasuda expressed interested on working on an open-world game, as seeing what the Playstation 5 can do recently by working on the Nioh Collection, the possibilities have been widened:

I would like to try and take on an open-world style game in the future. So that’s definitely something that I think this new hardware will give us the ability to try out.

He also added in an interview with Video Game Chronicle, he wanted to “put a new spin on the open world genre” as currently there hasn’t been open world games that have a lot of “intensity” or are “really action-packed”. From the sounds of this, Yasuda wants a full on open world experience but with the action and passion of the Nioh series.

Ninja Gaiden News

Yasuda also shared that there would be some new Ninja Gaiden news in the “near future”. At this time there isn’t any specific news to be announced but Yasuda hinted that some sort of news will be coming soon, and how without Ninja Gaiden, the Nioh IP wouldn’t have existed:

Nothing to announce or note specifically this time, but if the Ninja Gaiden series hadn’t existed, then there wouldn’t have been a Nioh series. So that’s a really important series to Team Ninja. While we don’t have anything specific to announce at this time, I would like to say just look forward to some potential news for some kind of announcement in the near future.

That’s a lot of titbits of information to process, ahead of the Nioh Collection release which launches on February 5th, along with Nioh 2 finally coming to PC with the Nioh 2 – The Complete Edition. These are the remastered versions of Nioh 2, the collection also includes Nioh remastered. To check out how Nioh 2 runs on PC watch our gameplay early look below:
