Windows 11 has now been available for around three months, but how many users have already switched? We take a look at how well the new operating system has been received since its release, comparing its launch to the early months of Windows 10 in 2015 and Windows 7 in 2009.
But you’re also in demand, because we want to know if Windows 11 resonates with our video game and tech-savvy readership and if you use the operating system more or less than average. So please take part in the following survey:
How widespread is Windows 11?
To see how widespread Windows 11 is after three months, we have numbers from the monthly Steam Poll and the Cross Promotion Network AdDuplex consulted.
Steam users got off to a slow start in October 2021. Incidentally, that was also the month in which Windows 11 was released. Here, only 1.82 percent of Steam users used the operating system. In the AdDuplex ecosystem, almost 5 percent of the PCs are already equipped with Windows 11.
The November figures are similar across the two platforms and the increase is quite large. According to Steam, 8.28 percent of users were already using the new operating system in November, with AdDuplex the figure was 8.6 percent. For December 2021 we only have numbers from the Steam survey showing a pretty decent month-on-month increase of almost 2 percent. Here, 10.15 percent are already using Windows 11.
We have prepared the figures again clearly in a table for you:
month | Steam | AdDuplex |
---|---|---|
October 2021 | 1.8 percent | 4.8 percent |
November 2021 | 8.3 percent | 8.6 percent |
December 2021 | 10.2 percent | Not available |
Even the paid Windows 7 is clearly ahead at the start
Compared to its predecessors Windows 10 and Windows 7, the latest Windows version is significantly slower according to Steam statistics. Three months after their release in 2015 and 2009, the two Windows versions were significantly more widespread in the Steam hardware survey:
The fact that Windows 7 is just at the top here is also remarkable because, unlike Windows 10 and Windows 11, the change was not possible free of charge at the time. With view on current numbers Windows 7, on the other hand, no longer plays a role on Steam.
According to a survey from December 2021, the share of Windows 7 is just over three percent, while Windows 10 comes to almost 82 percent. Last but not least, operating systems other than Windows play practically no role on Steam, Apple’s OSX achieves 2.7 percent, Linux 1.1 percent.
Spread of Windows 11 slowed down by Microsoft
One of the reasons for the slow start of Windows 11 is probably the excitement about the system requirements, which include a TPM module in version 2.0.
At the same time, they can also result in the update being offered to you late. Microsoft is gradually rolling out the new operating system. If your PC doesn’t qualify, Windows 11 may not even be offered to you.
In this case, you can download and install Windows 11 manually if you meet the requirements. In the guide, we tell you what your PC needs to be able to do and how exactly you install the operating system When will I get Windows 11 and how to make it faster?
