If you enjoy standing next to a virtual body of water, praying you’ve picked the right bug and enticed the water-dwelling creatures to take a bite, then No Man’s Sky’s latest update is definitely for you. Called Aquarius, it’s released today (September 4) and it’s all about catching alien fish through a host of new mechanics.

Following up on the heels of the well-received first part of the World Update – which revamped planetary biomes, added new weather effects and more immersive water effects – Hello Games has been inspired by some Reddit fan art to give people a chance to embrace their inner angler.

As explained in the patch notes and trailer below, Aquarius adds fishing to the game through a new system that lets players “explore the universe and find your perfect waterside spot to jump with the fish – sit back and relax and contemplate alone, or join other travelers to gaze out at the alien landscape and wait for the fish to bite.”

Sort of like Dredger, but with alien specimens replacing Lovecraftian aberrations, you can catch and catalog a wide variety of fish in your fishing log, all with “their own habitat and catch conditions.”

In addition to the rods you’d expect, you can also invest in a ton of equipment that will greatly benefit your fishing, like fishing cages that can “catch rare catches,” and personal fishing platforms that will keep you in the middle of a lake or pond instead of just on the edge. Never mind, we’ll pretend you invested in some floating metal just to be unsociable.

In addition to filling in your log as you fish, you’ll have the chance to win some trophies, gear, and cook up some goodies through new recipes. Plus, there’s a new expedition quest that encourages you to go out and fish for something you might need to tie to the top of your boat to haul home.

After getting the Aquarius update, will you boot up No Man’s Sky again to go fishing? Let us know below!
