Since the announcement of Battlefield 2042, players have been wondering whether the Rental Server Program (RSP for short) will return. This allowed players to rent their own servers in earlier Battlefield parts and operate them privately or publicly with their own settings and rules.
Now it is clear: At least at the launch there will be an RSP option neither for the normal multiplayer of BF2042, nor in the Battlefield Portal. That reports the BravoIntel portal citing the Battlefield Nation YouTube channel.
The developers at Ripple Effect (formerly DICE LA) have learned that there will be no RSP at the start. The possibility will be checked after the release, but is not committed to it.
Setting up private servers with password protection will therefore only be possible via the Battlefield Portal. The server instances required for this are generated by the manufacturer.
Is portal a replacement for RSP?
Instead of creating rental servers themselves, players can create their own game variants in the Battlefield Portal and adapt them to their needs using a variety of setting options. In addition to a logic editor for your own rules, there will also be the Possibility for kicks and bans from unwanted users. In addition, private matches for closed communities or solo variants (against bots) can be created.
However, this is not a complete replacement for rental servers: If a player creates their own mode in Portal, it is hosted by EA as a server instance in the cloud.
These servers are created along with a match and automatically re-created closed as soon as the last user leaves the server. Typical 24/7 servers that continue to run even when idle cannot be implemented with the Battlefield Portal.
There should be exceptions to this, however: In a special area of the main menu, official creations and fan servers (curated by the developers) are to be offered, which are then continuously available for a certain period of time, Ripple Effect confirms to GameStar when asked.
Third mode not yet revealed
Now that the Battlefield Multiplayer and Battlefield Portal have been officially presented, the third and final game mode called Hazard Zone is missing. It is speculated that it could contain elements from Escape from Tarkov, Hunt Showdown, and Battle Royale.
All three pillars are part of the overall BF2042 package and share XP progress and the season model with Battle Pass and new free content.
