The Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip powers almost all top Android-based smartphones. There will still be no Snapdragon 8 Gen 4. This is the reason.
Regardless of whether it’s the OnePlus 12, the Xiaomi 14 Ultra or the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra, almost all top smartphones have one thing in common: the processor. In 2024, all manufacturers with the exception of Apple and Google will be using the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen3 chip. Despite the success, Qualcomm will not release a Snapdragon 8 Gen 4.
The US manufacturer announced this at the “Snapdragon Summit” in Hawaii. Instead, the new top processor from Qualcomm is called Snapdragon 8 Elite. The new name is intended to make it clear that the chip is not a pure further development, but rather a completely new development in many parts, the company explained to Netzwelt in a press conference. In fact, initial benchmarks indicate a huge performance boost with the Snapdragon 8 Elite.
Neuer Name Snapdragon 8 Elite
The term “Elite” is certainly already familiar to Qualcomm fans. The US manufacturer also uses them in its Snapdragon X notebook processor. This is not the first time that Qualcomm has broken with its naming tradition. In 2022, Qualcomm did not bring a Snapdragon 898 onto the market as the successor to the Snapdragon 888, but introduced the “8 Gen” naming scheme, which has now also been dropped.
The first smartphones with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite are expected to be announced in the next few days – this could also include the Xiaomi 15.
