News culture “No visual effects” Zack Snyder will radically change the style of his next film after the failure of Rebel Moon on Netflix
After the failure of his Rebel Moon diptych, director Zack Snyder wanted to try something different and stepped out of his comfort zone. Would this change of direction usher in a new era for the director?
Zack Snyder sees it differently
While the diptych “Rebel Moon” was obviously not unanimously praised when it was released on Netflix, the director is thinking about his next project. The latter will change completely, according to Zack Snyder. In the Reel Blend podcast – a show that offers a review of the latest cinema news – the filmmaker behind Army of the Dead talks about his future wishes: He wants to make a film without visual effects. Many may not know it, but the man has a habit of using special effects – sometimes excessively – in addition to green backgrounds.
I’m trying to make a little film right now. I won’t say what it is, but I was wondering if I could make a five-minute film with no visual effects. Then I’ll go back to my madness…
It must be said that the director’s latest productions have not really followed this path. Let it be the diptych Rebel Moon or his previous projects like the Director’s Cut version of Justice League all received the same treatment: the use of VFX, CGI, and green backgrounds. This statement is indeed quite interesting, but it could be that the filmmaker is resorting to smaller productions, as was the case with his film Army of the Dead in which the undead appeared as actors wearing full make-up.
A director’s cut that is not up to date
Many have been waiting for it, and it is finally out. The Director’s Cut version of Rebel Moon 1 and 2 have been available on Netflix since August 2nd. These feature films, produced by Snyder, are intended to raise the standard of the original films and have been expanded to include several hours of new sequences. But that wasn’t enough, according to the trade press. These new iterations received a score of 25% and 33% respectively on the reference site Rotten Tomatoes.
Even though at first glance it seems that the filmmaker has had a series of failures, he does not give up and continues to produce new programs. Snyder’s next project Twilight of the Godsis an animated series aimed at an informed audience. This immerses viewers in the heart of Norse mythology. It is produced by The Stone Quarry – Zack Snyder’s production company – and Xilam Animation (origin ofOggy and the Cockroaches). The show will be released on Netflix on September 19th.
