Have you ever wanted to play as a Horse that wields a bow and arrow? Not a centaur, who is really known for using bows, but an actual, angry horse? Nobody Saves the World, the newest, funky looking action RPG developed by DrinkBox Studios allows you to do just that, and much more.
Nobody Saves the World is being released on January 18, 2022. It is an Action-RPG that relies on procedurally generated dungeons to create fun and wacky scenarios to mess around in. At its heart, it is a hack and slash game with colourful art that pops out of the screen.
Also as with any DrinkBox Studios game, you can be sure that there will be tons of quirky humour to go along with the beautifully made graphics. The developers promise that the quests in the game will be unconventional, wherein you will meet many of the odd residents of the world. Each of the player’s transformations also has unique quests which should have multiple ways of completing them.
Take Upon Many Forms
What really sets this gem apart is that you, a literal Nobody, find a wand that lets you transform into one of many forms. You can take on the form of a Ghost, a Dragon, a Slug, or even an Egg. Each and every form has its own unique skills and abilities. As you level up your forms, you gain quests that grant even more forms.
There will be over 15 distinct forms at launch, such as the Rat, Ranger, Guard, Bodybuilder, Necromancer, among others. The Nobody must then take his wand, and his many forms and then go on a quest to save the world.
The Crazy Customization System
Eventually, you gain so many options for transformation. You can then mix and match skills from various forms to be able to create many different playstyles. There will be over 80 Form abilities that you can combine to fully personalize your builds.
One example shown in an earlier trailer was that we have a Monk form, which is good at dealing damage. The main opponent though, the Corpse Exploder, can cause corpses to explode – that means bad news for us as we can kill enemies quickly, and stack up the corpses. We can take the Necromancer Form’s ability to bite foes and infect them with a zombie curse. Whenever we kill a cursed enemy, it becomes a zombie minion that can follow us around and has the added bonus of not creating corpses. The Corpse Exploder then has no fuel for its strongest attack.
Co-op play is also another key feature of the game. Of course, more players mean harder enemies. But this also brings in more options for some interesting skill combinations. Take the Rat Form, which can cause poisoned enemies to explode into noxious gasses. If you play with someone who takes the Horse Form, they have the ability to run around quickly and deal trample damage to multiple foes. The Horse can then take a passive skill that poisons all enemies he damages. This will effectively spread poison which the Rat can then detonate for massive damage.
Developer DrinkBox Studios
Developer DrinkBox Studios has been in the game for quite some time. Their previous games were Mutant Blobs Attack!!!, Severed, Guacamelee and Guacamelee 2. Their track record is so good that the original Guacamelee was part of our Top 10 Metroidvanias to Play in 2021.
The Guacamelee games are 2D Metroidvania brawler games. It is a sidescrolling action-platformer brawler that featured quick, satisfying combo-based combat. You also play as a powerful luchador and explore Mexican culture and folklore.
Creativity seems to be the name of the game here. DrinkBox Studios seems to encourage even sillier and sillier combinations to be used. The wilder, the better. We can’t wait to find out how we can create unique builds and quirky spell effects. While waiting for this to drop, be sure to check out our coverage of other Indie titles such as The Ascent or Hollow Knight.
