News culture “Not at eye level” After the success of Fallout, Amazon is dividing with this new video game adaptation: The Yakuza series is dividing fans
We already knew that there would be no karaoke scenes in the live-action Yakuza series. Of course it won’t be 100% on Rotten Tomatoes either…
Two eras for one adventure
We’ve known for a while that a live-action Like a Dragon: Yakuza series was coming. Today it is available on Amazon Prime. The six-part show focuses on the legendary Kazuma Kiryu, played by Ryoma Takeuchi. We discover a story that takes place between 1995 and 2005, two periods that show the evolution of the hero, his mistakes but also his consequences. “I tried to show these differences between the two eras, and the actors also helped me with that” explained Masharu Take, the director. As a reminder: Kento Kaku (House of Ninjas) plays the organized crime boss Nishiki, but also a former childhood friend of Kiryu.
Set in the fictional town of Kamurocho, the story takes place in two overlapping time periods: 1995 and 2005. In 1995, four friends who want to escape their overly strict life in an orphanage plunge into the controlled underworld of the Kamurocho Yakuza. In 2005, their friendship deteriorated as tensions between the Tojo Clan and the Omi Alliance reached its peak. Pitch available on Amazon Prime
“Too wise”
Barely released, the Yakuza series currently has a 67% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Yes, the criticism is shared. Some view adventure as “exciting“and”full of emotions“, that makes you want to “everything that happens next“. Others condemn them.”too wise to capture the intensely political spirit of its source material”. Critics certainly find it difficult to agree because “the right balance between the original material and reinventing it for a different medium” is complimented by another medium. “Regardless of whether or not this series deviates from the tone of the video game series, Like A Dragon: Yakuza is objectively a fantastic series” even ButWhySo dares. An opinion that DiscussingFilm is far from sharing, which, even if it welcomes, “l’efforts admirable“what helps him not to be”the worst adaptation of a video game“, warns that fans will be disappointed. “The problem with Like a Dragon: Yakuza is not only that it doesn’t match the madness and pathos of the original work, but perhaps more importantly, it doesn’t have much value“ concludes PasteMagazine.
