We have some bad news for Batman fans: their favorite vigilante has died in a brutal and bloody manner during one of the Elseworld stories in comics. Let this little introduction serve as a last chance for those who don’t want to know which comic series this event corresponds to.
The story of DC vs. Vampires: World War V belonging to Elseworld has surprised us with the death of Bruce Wayne. It is one of the cruelest and bloodiest aspects of this family of comics. The Dark Knight was convinced that Joker was the Vampire King who controls all vampires, but a mistake has cost him his life.
Nightwing has revealed himself as the leader of the vampires in DC vs. Vampires: World War V #1-2 and literally rips Bruce Wayne’s heart out of his chest. In fact, it already happened in DC Vs. Vampires #6 of 2021. The brutality of the scene kills almost all hope of a return. The via ScreenRant interviewed the writer of this series, Matthew Rosenberg, and asked him what will happen from now on. These are his words:
I think the DC Universe needs a Batman. He’s as elemental to the universe as air and sunlight are to us. Nature abhors a vacuum, and when there’s no Batman, the DC Universe eventually creates one. So, are we bringing Bruce back? Is there a new Batman? We’ll reveal it. I think people will be surprised. Some will say they saw it coming, a lot of them will be lying. Others will actually see it coming. But I think it makes sense. We wouldn’t do it if it didn’t make sense. And we wouldn’t do it if it didn’t serve the story.
Rosenberg does not reveal who will take over as Batman after the death of Bruce Wayne, but Fans already have some theories facing DC vs. Vampires: World War V #3: Luke Fox, Azrael, and Cassandra Cain, the latter being the front-runner. The most important point of this statement is the writer’s perspective on Batman. The (metaphorical) weight of his cape is something that not all characters want, but it wouldn’t be the first time someone tried to live up to the legend.
