I’ve been wondering for a while what the hell PlayStation is doing. It is not a question that arises from objective data, but from a very personal idea that is on my mind: my opinion has been devalued since they prioritized remasters and remakes over new installments.
The simplest way to exemplify this idea is to open the melon The Last of Us. Have you noticed that the franchise only has 2 stories + 1 DLC? But it has 5 versions: The Last of Us, The Last of Us Remastered, The Last of Us Part I, The Last of Us Part II and The Last of Us Part II Remastered. And we must add an abandoned and another canceled Online, and a very questionable PC version.
We cannot forget the famous Director’s Cut of Death Stranding and Ghost of Tsushima. Beyond all this, we have the incredible Gran Turismo 7, Demon’s Souls Remake y God of Warthe buried Unchartedsome Horizon Forbidden West y Returnal that “ni fu ni fa” and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, which continues the good work of its predecessors… but which can feel very attached to them.
All of the titles mentioned (except Uncharted) have more or less the attention of PlayStation. Just take a look at Valhalla God of War Ragnarök y The Burning Shores de Horizon Forbidden West
Days Gone: the great forgotten of PlayStation
I’m sure I’ve scared a few people away by mentioning Days Gone, developed by Bend Studio and currently available for PS4, PS5, and PC; and even more so after hinting in the previous paragraph that it deserves more attention than Sony’s goose that lays the golden eggs.
My conversations have had a common denominator: poor performance and massive bugs during the first days. Also, I remember that some media and content creators classified it as boring, repetitive and too long. Everything was the opposite of what my first experience was and much more so in the next two. I must be the luckiest Days Gone player in the world.
I don’t want to beat around the bush: Days Gone I think it’s an absolute marvel and it’s among my favorite PlayStation originals, along with God of War y Death Stranding. That would be my Top.3, followed by Joel and Ellie. Furthermore, I think it has one of the best Photo Modes I have ever tried… And there have been many.
Sons of Anarchy + World War Z: drama, motos y zombies
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 brought the role of Fast Travel in open-world video games back to the table, especially in an installment with such incredible scrolling. And it was rarely mentioned that Days Gone He has mobility and movements that have nothing to envy of Spidey.
Driving the motorcycle is very rewarding thanks to the driving physics, the open world design and the problems that come with doing so. Peter and Miles don’t run out of cobwebs, but Deacon has to deal with a lack of gas and a shortage of parts. And there is no business: if the motorcycle leaves you stranded, you have to push it or abandon it to look for bottles.
This in turn presents another problem: hordes. Going on foot means risking a scare, which in turn means wasting very valuable ammunition. Very few games have featured such detailed graphics and such a large number of zombies on the screen. We are talking about groups that usually exceed 200-300 spawns, which respond like a hive: just one person sees you to have problems. I still don’t understand how my PS4 didn’t burst, but I do understand that it was an airplane turbine.
To all this we must add factions of human and animal enemies, all of them with their ways of ambushing us with traps and traps. Days Gone achieves a cocktail that few games achieve with such good results: that exploration is as appealing as a problem in itself. It’s good survival.
Days Gone 2, a fair sequel
Two aspects that I cherish with great affection Days Gone They are its story, including Deacon himself voiced by Claudio Serrano, and the customization of the motorcycle. I admit that the story is not the best in the universe, but I am one of those people who he touched very sensitive chords. As for motorcycles, just remember two designs that conquered me: Horizon Zero Dawn
Sony has every reason to make a sequel to Days Gone. The most important: Bend Studio introduced a post-credits scene that deliberately left a main plot open. It was obvious that there were plans to continue the infection story with Deacon.
It deserves it and can be improved in many aspects: more types of spawns, enemy factions, weapons, types and customization of motorcycles, clothing and temperature system, etc. And more problems to face when maintaining the motorcycle: punctures in the wheels, battery, dirt and rust, inventory and saddlebags to carry resources, impact of the terrain on driving (mud, snow, ice, sand, rain… ) and types of wheels.
That said, there are two considerations in this regard. Jeff Ross, former head of Bend Studio, said in 2021 that the sequel was in the works for a while and everything seems to indicate that it was canceled due to the reception of Days Gonespecifically the notes.
They made me feel bad [las notas], to be honest… This is the reality of Sony, the Metacritic score is everything to them. If you are the creative director of a franchise and your game scores a 70, you won’t be the creative director of that franchise for long. […] Don’t complain that a game doesn’t have a sequel if you didn’t support it during its release.
Just because we want a sequel and it really deserves one, doesn’t mean it will happen. Likewise, (perhaps) The Last of Us It doesn’t need so much remastering and remake. The world is not fair… although there is a small ray of hope. A few days ago, Bend Studio confirmed that is working on something new. It needs not be Days Gone 2but it would be wonderful.
