Now that we’re on Helldivers 2’s co-op insanity, this underrated 2023 gem may also be your downfall

CoOp, downfall, Gem, Helldivers, Insanity, underrated

Who was going to tell us that February 2024 was going to have a protagonist as clear as Helldivers 2? With permission from Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, which has been released literally in the discount time of the month. Arrowhead Game Studios’ cooperative madness has been a smash hit on PS5 and PC, so much so that it has become PlayStation’s best launch beyond its consoles. And it’s a shame that Xbox users can’t enjoy it.

It’s been a long time since a cooperative PVE experience has had such a huge success. Neither as a mode nor mixed with PVP elements. Purely cooperative. There aren’t many relatively recent examples beyond Borderlands 3, A Way Out and It’s Take Two, and even so they are more measured deliveries compared to the current bombshell. Others like Outriders and Back 4 Blood failed in their attempt. Which leaves us with the only unbeatable: Left 4 Deadand still had a very addictive PVP mode.

The good news is that Helldivers 2 It will not be the only entirely cooperative PVE video game that we will see in 2024. If there are no more delays, September has another gem prepared for us that promises a lot: Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2. They share a common denominator that makes them absurdly addictive experiences: facing hordes mass of enemies outnumbered and with disproportionate weapons. I already told you about that.

Remnant 2, a hidden and underrated gem of 2023

Now what Helldivers 2 The dementia of cooperative video games has reawakened, I want to revive one of the great covered ones of 2023: Remnant 2 and its incredible DLC The Awakened King. It doesn’t have the musou touches that make Arrowhead Game Studios’ proposal so addictive, but it more than makes up for it by belonging to the Soulslike genre. It is known as the “dark souls with guns.”

Like Arrowhead, Gunfire Games opted to develop an experience designed to be played cooperatively. While the helldivers are soldiers without special features who fall on planets to fight against Terminids and Automata, the Realmwalkers are people capable of acquiring special abilities (Archetypes or classes) and surviving the horrors that hide the different kingdoms of their universe.

What makes Remnant 2 In the great game, beyond its settings and the gameplay itself, it is the structure on which everything is based. Both its story and its worlds are procedurally built on the same skeleton. The base objective is the same for all players, but the way to achieve it is completely different for each one. And it’s not a figure of speech. Literally every player has a unique experience.

Every time we start a game (story, adventure or DLC), Remnant 2 generates the worlds as we progress. Imagine a puzzle with many combinations in different layers:

  • The order of appearance of the worlds (N’erud, Yaesha and Losomn) is random. Only Earth (Base 13), Labyrinth and Root Earth persist the same for everyone.
  • The order of the zones of each world It’s also random. There are always more than we get. And even if we get the same ones as another player, it is more than likely that the order when visiting them will not be the same.
  • Because the zones are random, we will not necessarily find the same than other players: side quests, enemies and encounters, weapons, clothing, rings, amulets, items, and even crafting materials. The only thing that remains fixed within each area are the final bosses.

The way the game works is that all the missions, all the events, are random. So if you go in and fight a miniboss, and another player goes in and fights a miniboss in an area, they may have a completely different boss. You may have different events. There are different random events that occur in the game, and even the layout of the dungeons changes. – David Adams, director general de Gunfire Games.

In other words: it is impossible to know all the stories, see all the areas, reveal all the secrets and get all the items (including Archetypes or Classes) in a single game. Not two or three. And this is where the cooperative plays a very important role. Instead of playing the game over and over again alone (it’s possible), we can join other players to help them and explore their worlds.

And here comes the wonderful thing about Remnant 2: everything we get in another player’s game (regardless of which player acquires it) we take with us for our game. The only exception is quest items. Weapons, armor, amulets, rings, consumables, money and some side quest items come with us when we leave the session. Many of them are inaccessible in our game.

That’s our dream: you’re talking to others while you’re playing, or you’re coming home from work, or you’re watching a broadcast, and you say: wait, that’s not what I’ve done. […] He’s a guy with these huge horns and he’s doing some weird move, and you’re like, I’ve never seen that guy. I don’t even know what world you’re talking about. […] We didn’t want people to experience the same thing twice. – David Adams para IGN.

If you like cooperative experiences like Helldivers 2fight alongside other players and discover inhospitable worlds, then I recommend you take a look at Remnant 2. The Kingdomwalkers don’t have the incredible mobility of the Helldivers (nor their orbital attacks), but shooting side by side is just as addictive and fun. Also, the final bosses are really cool.
