Like the clothes and music of the 90s, the classic, really deep RPGs are making a comeback. And the good old demos can also be found more and more often on Steam.
Colony Ship, which is reminiscent of Fallout 2 or (thematically more distant) Baldur’s Gate 2, currently offers interested parties both: A rock-hard sci-fi role-playing game from the iso perspective and a free demo version on Steam. The game was released in Early Access in 2021 and currently has 800 reviews with 85 percent.
Our author Reiner Hauser also sees a lot of potential in Colony Ship in the early access test, along with a few open questions:
What is Colony Ship about?
The very name of the game is reminiscent of the old Fallout, which in its entirety is called Fallout 2: A Post-Apocalyptic Role Playing Game. In Colony Ship: A Post-Earth Role Playing Game you control a group that is in the year 2754 aboard a colony ship on the way to Proxima Centauri.
The journey takes generations. You were born and will die within the steel walls of the converted freighter. So you try to make the best of it. Difficult when the original government was overthrown during a mutiny and different factions are fighting for supremacy.
Colony Ship relies on classic role-playing virtues: Lots of dialogue, turn-based battles, important decisions. The huge ship also offers unexpected scenes, such as a hydroponic system, which could develop into a rampant jungle due to a lack of supervision.

Colony Ship: How to Play the Fallout-Inspired Sci-Fi RPG
By the way, Colony Ship is also DRM-free GOG available. If you want to try the game, you can Demo Download for free on Steam. The trial version features the first chapter of the story. If you then buy the game on Steam, you can continue playing with your own save from the demo.
