Nvidia cancels RTX 3080 20 GB & RTX 3070 16 GB

cancels, NVIDIA, RTX

According to current rumors, there are probably no RTX 3080s with 20.0 GB of VRAM under the Christmas tree – and nothing else.

Actually, the matter was clear: AMD is bringing its new Radeons – which, by the way, there has just been a really big leak – and Nvidia counters with souped-up versions of the Geforce RTX 3080 and the Geforce RTX 3070. Or maybe not?

Models with more VRAM allegedly deleted: Like the colleagues from Videocardz but now report that both the 20 Gbyte variant of the RTX 3080 and the 16 Gbyte variant of the RTX 3070 are said to have been completely deleted – and not just moved.

How trustworthy is the rumor? It is unclear whether the information is reliable, but it should come from two sources that are independent of one another, but not specified.

If you want to get one of the new Geforce graphics cards, you of course also need the right hardware. In the upgrade guide for the RTX 3080, we explain which PC components guarantee the best performance – and how much they cost.

RTX 3080 & 3070 with more VRAM were considered safe

Just a few weeks ago, exact product names from the manufacturer Gigabyte were leaked, which should confirm both the RTX 3080 with 20.0 GByte video memory and the RTX 3070 with 16.0 GByte. Rumors predicted this long before the Ampere graphics cards were presented.

According to a later leak, the models with more video memory should appear in December this year – in time for the Christmas business.

Even if models with more VRAM have been deleted for the time being, that does not mean that there cannot be an upgrade:

Why should Nvidia then cancel the cards?

There is no clear explanation on the part of Videocardz and of course neither no statement from Nvidia yet. After all, the cards themselves hadn’t even been officially approved. Nonetheless, we asked Nvidia and will keep you up to date on this, even if we can only expect a meaningful answer to a limited extent.

From one of the two sources it is only said that there are “problems with the yield” (ie with the production) of fast GDDR6X modules at the memory manufacturer Micron. However, this should only affect the RTX 3080 20 GB and not the RTX 3070 16 GB. The latter should receive normal GDDR6 modules.

Nvidia also has other problems:

Not everything was deleted: It also says that the plans for a Geforce RTX 3060 Ti should not be affected by the deletions.
