It’s no big secret: the new graphics cards from both Nvidia and AMD are scheduled to appear at the end of this year. An exact date for the launch of the Geforce RTX 4000 and Radeon RX 7000 is not yet known, nor is there an announcement, but it should be sometime during the autumn months.
When new generations of graphics cards are so imminent, it is actually not a good time to recommend buying the current models. And yet it could make sense this year. This has to do with a special constellation that at least Nvidia apparently did not expect. What’s going on there?

Drop in sales due to miscalculations
Practically unthinkable a year ago, but Nvidia’s warehouses are now stuffed to the brim with graphics cards. The company has miscalculated with regard to the expected sales. At least that is what the business figures for the second fiscal year 2023 show Nvidia himself recently published:
According to this, the turnover of the gaming division in the past quarter fell by 44 percent compared to the previous three months. It missed sales guidance for the May-July 2022 period by a full $1.4 billion. However, what that means for the profit margin is not known.
For gamers, however, this could mean that the prices for RTX 3080 and Co. will soon be massively corrected downwards. The annual report mentions pricing programs
, which should lead to the sale of the full stock. In the following podcast we tell you what we generally expect for 2022 with regard to new hardware:

Well available: RTX cards at Amazon
What are the reasons for the drop in sales? Nvidia does not comment specifically on this, it is only mentioned macroeconomic headwinds
referred. Above all, this should mean the slump in the price of the cryptocurrency Ethereum, as a result of which cryptominers are hardly buying graphics cards anymore. On the contrary: Used GPUs are sloshing back into the market, which should also have a negative impact on the sales figures for new graphics cards.
Drop in sales a boon for gamers?
Of course, it remains to be seen how this will turn out pricing programs
ultimately affect the end customer. However, if an RTX 3080 is available for well below the RRP of 759 dollars, the purchase could also be worthwhile in terms of the potential performance of the next generation.
At least for all those who don’t want to use one of the new high-end models in the form of the RTX 4080 or RTX 4090 anyway. However, if you are flirting with an RTX 4060 or RTX 4070, you could also be well positioned with an RTX 3080. Especially since Nvidia will have no interest in undermining its own range in terms of pricing.
In the course of this, AMD would probably also be forced to adjust the prices for the RX 6000 series accordingly. We are therefore very excited to see what the next few weeks will bring. After the sometimes exorbitantly high purchase costs for graphics cards in recent years, a drastic price reduction would be more than welcome!
What do you think? Will graphics cards really be so cheap in the near future that it might be worth grabbing the current models instead of waiting for the new generation? Or do you think that’s rather unlikely? Write it to us in the comments!
