Many O2 customers are currently receiving a strange text message. It says that their phone number is being switched off. This is what it means.
In principle, an SMS from your mobile phone provider is nothing unusual. However, you should not always blindly trust such cell phone messages, as a recent case involving O2 customers shows. They are currently quite confused by an SMS from the mobile phone provider.
The provider’s message states that your phone number will be deactivated on a specific date. You will only be able to continue using it if you follow an attached link. But you should definitely not follow this request.
Fraud attempt via SMS
The SMS does not contain useful information from the mobile phone provider, but rather an attempt at fraud. Cyber criminals want to use this method to obtain your personal data. If you follow the link, you will land on a fake O2 page and be asked to log in.
How O2 itself reportsthe fraudsters can use the stolen data to order new cell phones at your expense and in your name.
Recognizing the fraud
This scam is not a new idea. Such texts are sent repeatedly via SMS in the name of O2. In addition to the deactivated phone number, the supposed expiration of your SIM card is also popular. Only the sender number and the link are constantly changed.
Speaking of links. This is the most insidious thing about the attempted fraud, as it looks very real. O2 points out that official links from the provider always take you to the o2.de or o2online.de pages. Short links are also always sent with g.o2.de. For example g.o2.de/o2_app.
Fallen into the trap? This is what you have to do now
If you have fallen for the convincing phishing link and have provided your data, you must act immediately. This way you can prevent data misuse.
First of all, you need to change all your passwords that are associated with the account. The customer ID number also needs to be changed urgently. Then contact O2 customer support and inform them of the situation. They will ensure as quickly as possible that your data is no longer visible on My O2.
Always remember not to trust unknown numbers and especially not to click on unknown links. If you are unsure whether a message really comes from O2, you can always contact the Support or the O2 Community turn around.
