Obi-Wan looks into the distance in shock, and the cloaked figure turns to look directly at him – and through the camera, at us. Who is it? The camera doesn’t zoom in, and Obi-Wan doesn’t see it properly either. But the scene is exciting, almost scary and we quickly realize: It’s Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen)!
It’s only logical that Obi-Wan would have visions of his former student after the events of Star Wars: Episode III. Not seeing him as Darth Vader is also only logical, since Obi-Wan hadn’t seen his student in the machine suit until then. Instead, he sees the Jedi and friend he remembers.
We learned in the first two episodes that Obi-Wan thought Anakin was dead. He’s been blaming himself for all these years and now he has to realize that it’s even worse: his one-time friend is now on the dark side of the Force and chasing him, consumed by anger.
The vision could tell us a bit about the direction in which the series will go. Obi-Wan’s path will be to break away from the image he still has of Anakin. This means his hopes of bringing Anakin back to the light side of the Force must be dashed.
We’ll probably see a few more visions and flashbacks with Anakin in Episode 4 before Obi-Wan’s hopes fade and he’s soon only pursued by Vader.
We will find out how Obi-Wan and Anakin will actually continue in the next episodes, which appear every Wednesday at 9 a.m. in the Disney + New Releases program. After “Obi-Wan Kenobi” we continue this year with further “Star Wars” releases.
