News JVTech “Obviously it’s very dangerous.” The founding father of the internet is adamant about crypto
After ten years of existence, cryptos are still at odds with some key tech figures. Tim Berners-Lee, inventor of the World Wide Web, is among those unconvinced by the technology and recently publicized it in a radical tone.
Cryptocurrencies are “dangerous” according to Tim Berners-Lee.
Presented as an internet revolution, cryptocurrencies regularly suffer from their ultra-speculative nature. For Tim Berners-Lee, inventor of the World Wide Web (www), this aspect takes precedence over the technology itself.
On the occasion of one Interview for CNBC The founding father of the internet was clear about virtual currencies:
“It’s just speculative. Obviously it’s really dangerous,” Berners-Lee said.
To back up his point, the man compared the rise of cryptocurrencies to the internet speculation bubble of the 2000s. With this idea, Tim Berners-Lee insists that several projects in the crypto sector managed to hit highs before crashing like these rested on no foundations. Therefore, according to the creator of the internet, the price of these cryptocurrencies is completely decoupled from the actual value of what they offer.
“I don’t want to spend my time investing in certain things, which is purely speculative,” he added.
In addition, he also does not consider cryptos to be necessarily useful and more similar to gambling.
“Basically, if you want to have fun playing,” says Tim Berners-Lee
However, he acknowledges that these can be particularly functional in the context of a quick money transfer if these are immediately exchanged back into fiat currency (dollars, dollars, etc.) upon arrival – to protect against the volatility of the money sector.
Tim Berners-Lee regrets using the internet today
This categorical opinion on cryptos is part of a global idea. Whether Web2 or the blockchain-based concept of Web3, the computer scientist behind the World Wide Web is not a big fan of the evolution of the Internet. Specifically, he was particularly critical of data protection.
For this reason, since 2015, Berners-Lee has set himself the goal of restructuring the Internet with his company Inrupt and his Solid initiative. Concretely, the goal of this project is to propose a decentralized Internet where the user has full control over his data.
However, the computer scientist does not use the Web3 blockchain for this, a concept that he considers “pointless”.
This opinion on blockchain technology obviously does not please supporters of the crypto ecosystem. Some believe that the client concerned is not sufficiently informed about the values of anonymity and freedom that blockchain technology enables – principles that he nevertheless vehemently defends with his startup.
